A tropical jungle cactus! That's right, this shaggy-haired looking succulent is from the hot and humid rainforests of South America. It wouldn't cope well in a dry desert at all!
AKA the Mistletoe Cactus, their pencil like stems will eventually cascade over the side of any pot and they are pretty forgiving when it comes to taking care of them.
Pssst... they are also super trendy right now!
As Rhipsalis is a jungle cactus, they really enjoy bright light but will burn if exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods. We have ours in an east facing window so that it gets loads of bright morning light to warm up and then a whole bunch of shade in the afternoon to chill out in.
Water little and often to keep the soil moist. 1-2 times per week in the hot summer. A good indicator of when to give Rhipsalis a drink is when the top of soil has dried out a little. Your Rhipsalis doesn't like to go thirsty but also really hates wet feet so make sure there's plenty of drainage to keep it happy. In the winter, let the soil dry out completely before another watering.
As always, rain water is best!
Don't be confused by the fact that Rhipsalis is technically a cactus, as it's a jungle dweller it likes a humid environment so brightly lit kitchens or bathrooms will suit them wonderfully.
A watered down Cactus feed every 6 months or so. Yum!
100% safe for pets and children.
